why you need a why
When I started in my sex addiction recovery program, I remember hearing that I needed to create a toolbox as part of one of my first assignments. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect since I was a 38 year old man who did not know his way around tools, forget power tools. Luckily as you probably already know, it wasn’t actual tools. (pray hands emoji)
This toolbox was one of our biggest assets in beginning on this recovery journey. In your toolbox, we needed to include different items such as; notes from a family member, pictures, a letter to yourself, very meaningful things that bring you back to reality and become motivation in those tough times. Among all these different items, there was the WHY STATEMENT.
This caught my attention.
The WHY statement was a short paragraph or so that explained WHY you are working at recovery. What was your motivation? When the strong temptation hits, how are you going to remind yourself WHY?
This was one of my favorite exercises because it really brought me back to the main thing. It brought me back to my calling, my intentions, my dreams, my freedom and my true heart. This one statement could take my from complete crazy limbic brain right back to my pre- frontal cortex where the logical Michael lived.
I’d like to share my WHY statement with you.

MY WHY
I fight because my wife deserves my best.
My boys deserve a dad that is devoted to their mother and them. They deserve a dad and husband that is free to love them and not tangled in sin.
I fight because I believe that God is not finished with me yet. I believe that what is ahead is better than whats behind me.
I fight because I believe that I’ll like longer free than I did bound.
I fight because of the cross, I deserved it but He took it.
I fight because freedom doesn’t mean that I’ll be perfect, rather that I am drenched in mercy. This is my WHY.
Wow. It’s still as powerful years later with more than a year and a half of sobriety.
I wonder what your why statement might be.

It’s time to ask the tough questions. If you can do this now, when you are deep into recovery work, you will have a more solid foundation under your feet.
And let me remind you, you don’t have to do this alone, in fact, PLEASE don’t do this alone!
You were not made to do life alone and you were not meant to carry this burden alone.
